  • Mr. Deshpande, a resident of Mumbai city, fears the rains.
  • Mr. Shah staying in Ahmedabad, fears the ground he walks on.
  • Mr. Radhakrishnan residing in Chennai, fears the sea.
  • Mrs. Ghosh living in Kolkata, fears her maid.

    And they all have their respective reasons. Mr. Deshpande saw his house being washed away in the floods that struck Mumbai, on the 26th July 2005. Mr. Shah witnessed his house collapse like a pack of cards, on 26th January 2001 due to the 7.9 Richter scale earthquake that hit Ahmedabad. Mr. Radhakrishnan witnessed the otherwise calm and still sea, attacking and swallowing his little cottage in Chennai. Reason- Tsunami dated 26th December 2004. Mrs. Ghosh on the other hand, suffered an encounter with a burglar who robbed her off her jewellery and other valuables. You cannot prepare for calamities. They come, they strike, they ruin and one is left devastated. But, on second thoughts. One can do something about them. Lets consider the above cases. The individuals above could have let go their phobias, had they made one small move, in time. They all saw their respective homes facing devastation. Each of them must have saved every penny earned, to set the house of their dreams. That house would symbolize so much. Little sacrifices made. An end to many wishes. Many aspirations given up. Just for that well framed mould of bricks. And one day they saw this mould becoming a pile of bricks again.

    I am sure each of us has heard about Home insurance. But do we all realize the worth of it? Well to begin with, Home Insurance is a cover that insures you against the loss or damage of your home and its belongings, which include jewellery and other domestic appliances. It also provides cover for third party liability and loss of baggage while traveling within India. In order to get your house insured, you should consider the following;

  • Is the structure of your home worth over Rs 500,000? (The value of the building and not the market value of the property.)
  • Does your home have valuable plate glass doors and windows?
  • Do you own electronic gadgets worth over Rs 200,000?
  • Is your house located in an area that is prone to the risks of floods, earthquakes or burglaries?
  • Are you living in a rented house, but own high-value domestic and electronic appliances?
  • Do you have expensive furniture?

    If the answer to any of the above questions is yes, then you definitely need a home insurance cover.

    Home Insurance covers all the valuables in your home. If the policyholder does not know how to claim compensation under this insurance he can look through the following steps;

  • Call your insurance agent immediately when the need for a claim arises. Keep their phone numbers handy.
  • Immediately report burglaries to the police. Always keep the purchase receipts of your jewellery carefully since the insurance company will verify whether you owned it before handing you the compensation.
  • In case of floods, take photographs of the damage before cleaning up and salvaging what is left.
  • If a fire destroys your policy document too along with other belongings, inform the insurance company about it.
  • Don't discard damaged material. It will be required as proof of loss.
  • After the insurance company's surveyor examines and estimates the loss, send a letter to the insurance company stating all the damages in detail. Maintain a copy of this letter.

    What is lost can never be regained in its true form. But something close to what one possessed ever, can be regained. It just takes a few simple steps. And life does not look, that hard a jigsaw puzzle any longer.
